Course outline

Day 1 – Typical venue would be Mt Edith Cavell East col

  • Knots for glacier travel
  • Snow and ice travel
  • Snow and ice anchors
  • Crevasse rescue demo
  • Ascending a rope
  • Crevasse rescue

Day 2 – Typical venue would be the Columbia Icefields area

  • Glacier morphology
  • Glacier travel and roping up
  • Techniques to safeguard while on the glacier
  • Shortening and lengthening the rope
  • Crevasse rescue

Course cost

$1400 +gst for up to 6 participants

Course dates

Courses can be scheduled from May to October.

General info

This course was developed to provide the skills required to travel safely on glaciers. No previous experience is necessary, however fitness levels to be able to travel for half a day with heavy day packs is recommended.

Equipment list

Equipment list for glacier travel course

  • Daypack large enough for spare clothing, lunch, climbing equipment
  • Lunch and water
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen are an absolute must
  • Rain gear
  • Clothing suitable for the weather (Glaciers are cold so think winter as we will be on snow and ice)
  • Wool hat and 2 pairs of gloves (1 pair will likely get wet while practicing crevasse rescue)
  • Gaiters
  • I can provide mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet and all technical climbing equipment
  • You will need to pick up mountaineering boots, crampons, and an ice axe from Gravity Gear the day before the course if you don’t have your own

Stream requires PHP version 7.0 or newer. Plugin is currently NOT ACTIVE.
