Rock Climbing: Intro to rock climbing

Course outline

Day 1: Typical venue would be Morro slabs 9am to 5pm

  • Equipment overview
  • Knots and rope safety
  • Rappeling and climbing techniques
  • Anchor building
  • Introduction to setting up a top rope

Day 2: Typical venue would be the Rock Gardens 9am to 5pm

  • Setting up top ropes
  • Guarding against pendulum falls
  • Protecting your belayer
  • Lead climbing demonstration

Course cost

$1200 +gst for up to 6 participants

Course dates

Courses can be scheduled from May to October.

This is a 2 day course designed to give you the skills you need to comfortably get out on your own.

Equipment list

Equipment list for day rock climbing

  • Daypack large enough for spare clothing, lunch, climbing equipment
  • Lunch and water
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Rain gear
  • Clothing suitable for the weather (long pants help protect the knees while climbing)
  • Footwear for hiking
  • I can provide rock shoes, harness, helmet and all technical climbing equipment
  • You will need to pick up rock shoes from Gravity Gear the day before the course

Rock Climbing: Advanced rock climbing

Course outline

Day 1 – Typical venue would be Hidden Valley

  • Review basic rope skills and techniques
  • Setting up top ropes and review rappelling
  • Ascending ropes and troubleshooting
  • Demo of lead climbing on bolts
  • Cleaning anchors

Day 2 – Typical venue would be Morro Bluffs

  • Learn to lead climb on bolts
  • Multi pitch climbing on bolts
  • Introduction to placing gear
  • Demo of lead climbing with gear

Course cost

$1200 +gst for up to 6 participants

This 2 day course is designed to get you leading rock climbs within your comfort level. The focus will be on rope skills. Participants on this course must have taken an Intro to rock course in the last year or have substantial personal climbing experience.
